Explore the beautiful island of Lanzarote - 7 nights in 4* Papagayo Arena Resort

The Canaries are located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco and typically offer everything from mass tourism to tiny fishing villages, whitewashed hamlets perched on hilltops and even a few wild places within the dull roar of a volcano. Located almost at the southern tip of Lanzarote lies the relaxing holiday destination of Playa Blanca. Other popular beaches in the area include Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo. You’ll find an enticing selection of seafront restaurants and outdoor cafes serving freshly caught fish, as well as a pretty harbour area. At night you're offered low-key entertainment in the bars and cafes of the resort.
Things to see and do in Playa Blanca

  • Enjoy a trip to El Golfo emerald lagoon
  • Take a trip to neighbouring Fuerteventura

Lanzarote is a delight. In fact it is a work of art! Apart from having an amazing volcanic landscape -more of that in a moment-, Lanzarote has succeeded in becoming a popular holiday destination without any of the ugliness that can go with rapid development. The island came to tourism late and, it seems, benefited from the lessons of others. The main inspiration and guiding hand was that of its most famous son, the artist César Manrique, who worked throughout his life to ensure that the unique topography was protected. He influenced much of the modern architecture, so hotels blend perfectly with the neat little towns and villages. Lanzarote is a wonderful place for nature lovers, with many migrating birds and, in spring, thousands of butterflies. The volcanoes are responsible for the dark colour of most of the beaches and the smouldering heat just under the surface amazes visitors, especially when they see food cooked by simply putting a pot in the ground! Implausibly, very passable wine is produced. Vines are planted in volcanic ash in hollows that collect dew and offer protection from the wind. Palms and fruit trees give colour to what is otherwise a dark, brooding, but fascinating landscape. Lanzarote is a suntrap second to none - its closeness to Africa and the Tropic of Cancer gives it a dry and sunny climate with average year-round temperatures of 22°C - just the place for sun-starved Britons.

4* Papagayo Arena Resort - 7 nights - bed and breakfast

'All-inclusive' does not have to imply inferior food, drinks or accommodation! The attractive Papagayo Arena has space, excellent bedrooms and a wealth of amenities for which you don't have to open your wallet once you have settled in - and the wide choice of bars and restaurants won't disappoint you. The coast to the south-east of Playa Blanca has some lovely beaches, none more so those of Papagayo under half a mile away; there is a little one immediately below the hotel but the pool area is so good that not many guests bother to clamber down to it. The islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura are just opposite. Even within this inclusive resort there is scope for some exclusivity: you may choose to pay and have something extra, such as a massage or haircut, rent a bike or treat yourself to dinner in the French à la carte restaurant. Families with children will enjoy this exciting addition to Lanzarote's better places as much as couples wanting to treat themselves.
